FUNDAMENTAL STUDY ON THE CONTROL OF SNOW ACCRETION AND SNOW COVER ON ROAD RELATED FACILITIES
When road related facilities are installed in snowy regions, snow accretion and snow cover on the facilities are issued that need to be dealt with. If snow accretion occurs on road signs, information boards, traffic signals, delineators, etc., drivers have difficulty in understanding characters, shapes, lights and reflectors and this can lead to accidents. Also, snow cover on structure above roads, (e.g., truss bridges, road sign, elevated section, pedestrian crossing bridge, pi mouth of tunnel) can cause many snow rump falling. This paper describes some of the measures considered to control this snow accretion and snow cover. They are: (1) devising structure shapes; (2) the improvement of surface treatment; and (3) the use of external energy, such as heat and vibration. The major emphasis in the paper focuses on a fundamental examination of (1) and (2) without relying on external energy like (3).
