PUBLICITY ACTIVITIES FOR SAFE DRIVING ON EXPRESSWAYS IN WINTER
JH Hokuriku Branch maintains approximately 680 km on 5 expressways that includes Hokuriku, Kan-etsu, Ban-etsu, Joushin-etu, and Tokai-Hokuriku. Winter weather is severe and there are large amounts of snow in the areas of these expressways. Considering the role of the expressways, it is extremely important to keep the traffic safe and secure during the winter months. JH Hokuriku Branch has made great strides in avoiding road closures, not only by hard countermeasures such as installing chain bases and fixed antifreeze agent sprinklers, but also by soft measures for example dispatching emergency snow removal personnel to the extremely heavy snow regions. The Branch has realized that, drivers' understanding and cooperation for safe driving on snowy roads are inevitable in order to keep safe and secure traffic conditions during winter. The paper describes the new measures of providing information and public relations so that drivers from areas without snow can prepare for safe driving on snowy roads. It also reports on the future direction of public relations by analyzing the results of questionnaires and surveys.
