EFFECTIVENESS OF BUS SIGNAL PRIORITY

This paper explores the implications of bus signal priority (BSP), presenting a more objective analysis of the advantages and disadvantages. Interviews with transit professionals were conducted to obtain perceptions of traffic engineers and transit planners on BSP. The paper explores the more significant issues of BSP, including selecting priority strategies, the impact to non-transit vehicles, congestion, and bus travel times. In addition the pros and cons of the different BSP approaches/technologies are explained. The paper also presents information on major cities in the United States that have implemented BSP.
