THE BIGGEST GROUNDWATER PROTECTION PROJECT IN FINLAND-THE PROTECTIONS OF HIGHWAY 25 COSTS 3.8 MILLION DOLLARS
This paper discusses the largest groundwater protection project in Finland. The area is situated in the southernmost part of Finland and consists of five separate groundwater areas. Because of the fact the groundwater level is too close to ground level along Highway 25 in many places reconstruction was difficult. The average daily traffic (ADT) on highway 25 between Hanko and Skogby is 3,300 hundred vehicles and the estimated ADT for the year 2010 is expected to be about 5,700. This section of road belongs to the highest winter maintenance class and this groundwater protection project is by far the largest in Finland. Groundwater protections will be constructed over a distance 16.5 kilometers and slopes will be protected over an area of over 300,000m(2). There will be 14 discharge points, 10 of which will be into the sea and 4 in the ground. Three pumping plants will be constructed and a geosynthetic clay liner will be used as protective materials. It is estimated that the price per kilometer for groundwater protection will 0.227 million dollars, the project costs for this reconstruction will be as high as 3.8 million dollars.
