GUIDANCE DOCUMENT FOR SCRAP TIRES UTILIZATION IN EMBANKMENTS
At many local transportation projects in Pennsylvania, the cost of construction may be reduced by utilizing a waste or by-product material as a substitute for conventional soils for fill material. The purpose of this research is to develop a product and material use approval process for state and local projects to utilize scrap tires as an alternative to conventional aggregates and soils in embankments. The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on the utilization of scrap tires in embankments. This document contains the following sections: (a) Introduction to scrap tire utilization; (b) Physical-chemical properties of scrap tires; (c) Embankment design issues; (d) Design examples for scrap tires in embankments; (e) Laboratory testing of tire shreds; and (f) A sample provisional specification.
