TPEG - THE 21ST CENTURY'S TTI SYSTEM - INDUSTRY PARTNERS REACH THE MARKET WITH A CO-OPERATIVE APPROACH
TPEG (Transport Protocol Expert Group) is a new Traffic and Traveller Information (TTI) system, which is based on decades of experiences with older systems like ARI, RDS-TA/TP,-EON and RDS-TMC (ALERT C) and on a list of requirements of potential users, service and content providers, broadcasters, car manufacturers and set makers. These requirements are: Bearer Independence (TPEG data to be transported via DAB, DVB, Internet, GSM(-GPRS), UMTS, ...); Language Independence (user selects his preferred language); Independence from location database on the terminal side; Multi- and Inter-Modality (one TPEG application per transport mode, enable combination of transport modes by the terminal); Address all kinds of terminals, from cheap ones equipped with simple text displays up to devices with digital maps, GPS receiver, large colour displays and route guidance algorithms; Ease of implementation, both cost-wise and technically; and Offer a higher level of precision concerning event descriptions and geographical reference. In order to verify that TPEG pre-standards fulfill the requirements, for building consensus about its implementation and for setting a firm basis for an operational market for TPEG devices, committed organisations built a partnership in form of the TPEG Project.
