METHODS TO REDUCE DIRECT MAINTENANCE COSTS FOR COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT
A substantial part of aircraft's ownership is contributed by direct maintenance costs (DMC). The paper reports on a research that attempted to find some methods to reduce that DMC. The research identified design and fault diagnosis as key factors to influence DMC while disregarding factors unique to a particular airline. Discussed is a new concept of research and maintenance design - maintenance free operating period along with a fault diagnosis expert system that can reduce DMC.
