FOCUSING ON SAFETY
The 'safer routes to schools' initiative implemented by Nottingham City Council, UK is described. The council has worked with Prismo using its Imprint surface to improve safety at roundabouts and on speed bumps and tables. The safer route team research the perceived needs of a school by consulting children on their routes, walking the routes, determining where accidents have occurred and asking parents and pupils what they would like to see done. Bollards in the shape of boys (Billy the Bollard) have been used to warn drivers that they should be slowing down for children. School-gate traffic will be reduced by children using trams from park-and-ride sites and by using 'Drop and Go' sites.
