THE AZTECH MODEL DEPLOYMENT INITIATIVE MATURES INTO A PROVEN, RELIABLE ITS PERFORMER
AZTech was formed by the Maricopa County Department of Transportation and Arizona Department of Transportation and developed through a partnership of more than 40 public agencies and private companies to provide real-life examples of the potential effect of technology on urban transportation. In 1996 the AZTech project was awarded a $7.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation and an intelligent regional transportation system was developed for the Phoenix metropolitan area with 2.7 million residents. This system, which is one of the most advanced in the world, provides advanced traveller information, and enhanced transportation management system, improved public transit, and reduced travel time and cost. Plans to develop and expand the system are described. (A*) For the covering abstract see ITRD E110327.
