TRANSPORTATION AND SAFETY IN JAPAN : INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND IMPACT OF ETC ON THE METROPOLITAN EXPRESSWAY IN JAPAN
The introduction of electronic toll collection in Japan promises to have a major impact on traffic congestion and other aspects of the transportation system because of the high percentage of goods that move on toll roads and the extensive network of tolled freeways. Challenges include establishing a common standard among the many different entities that collect tolls, guaranteeing security of transactions, and incorporating existing infrastructure such as tollgates.
