FRACTURE TOUGHNESS STUDY OF HULL MATERIAL FOR THE FLOATING NUCLEAR PLANT
Details of a test program involving 12 plates of "off the shelf" American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Grade CS material for 3 different producers are presented. The plates tested included 2 thicknesses 7/8" and 1-3/8") and 7 different heats. The tests were run primarily to determine the fracture toughness properties of the material. Additional tests were included to establish whether the materials represented met the ABS requirements for Grade CS plate. The tests included: Tension (T); Charpy V-Notch (CVN); Dynamic Tear (DT); Drop Weight (DW); Grain Size (GS); Chemistry (C); Microstructure. Results indicate that on the basis of DT and DW requirements specified by Offshore Power Systems' Naval Architecture Division, 4 of the 12 plates tested were unsatisfactory. All plates that failed were from a single source. A statistical examination of the data for one acceptable plate indicated a wide spread in energy absorbed for transverse DT tests at +30 degrees F, which at the lower end closely approached the 250 ft-lb allowable minimum.
