QUALITY OF LIFE : ATSSA JOINS PARTNERSHIP TO HELP UPGRADE WORK-ZONE PROTECTION
A growing increase in work-zone activities has also led to an increase in work-zone fatalities, and as a result, the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) has partnered with the National Partnership for Highway Quality (NPHQ) in an effort to upgrade work- zone protection and ensure traffic safety. This article describes effective work-zone safety programs that have been implemented in Arizona, Georgia, and Oregon. It also discusses how the Minnesota Department of transportation has conducted studies on work-zone signage and assessing a new dynamic late merge system for improving merging at lane closures. In Maryland, the State Highway Administration has also implemented a gradual lane merging system that advises motorists. The article concludes with a plea from the ATSSA and the NPHQ for further federal funding for a highway safety program targets roadway hazards and improvements to the infrastructure.
