NYCT MILLENNIUM CAR CRASH TEST: A FIRST FOR NORTH AMERICAN TRANSIT - A DESIGN METHOD FOR IMPROVING CRASHWORTHINESS OF PASSENGER RAILCARS

Kawasaki Heavy Industries manufactures transportation equipment, encompassing a technological base that includes ships, rolling stock, aircraft, jet engines, and other products. The rolling stock division has performed many crash analyses for domestic and overseas rolling stock, but crash testing and correlation between analysis and test has not been carried out until recently. An analysis method that is shown to be in agreement with test results is described in this paper. The method has been used to develop efficient energy absorbing structures at the car body end sill. The method correlates well with full scale static tests of the end structure and of a dynamic crash test of a full size car.
