DRIVERLESS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEMS TAKE HOLD

Driverless rapid transit systems were first introduced to public in 1983, in Lille, France and in 1986, in Vancouver, Canada. Since then, the system has multiplied in Europe and Asia. Vancouver has remained the sole such system in North America. This paper's focus is highlighting the growing number of driverless rapid transit systems that are currently being deployed around the world. Sixteen lines in twelve cities are currently in service or under construction. System length, type of procurement method employed, vehicle and train control supplier, peak hour capacity are some of the information presented in this paper for each of the sixteen lines.
