MDOT SYSTEM TO HELP DRIVERS : MESSAGE BOARDS WILL WARN MOTORISTS OF I-496 WORK DELAYS
The Michigan DOT is deploying intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to guide traffic through Lansing while a major interstate is closed for reconstruction. This is the first time the DOT has used ITS in a construction zone. Staff in a DOT control center use information from 17 closed-circuit tv cameras and six portable speed detectors to send appropriate computer-generated messages to changeable signs. If traffic drops below 20 mph, the signs advise motorists to seek alternate routes. A public education campaign has also warned drivers to have at least three alternative ways to get to their destinations and the DOT has a Web site with updates of the construction schedule and alternatives to driving such as vanpools, ridesharing and transit.
