DEMONSTRATING THE APPLICATION OF ITS TO RURAL AND REMOTE AREAS OF QUEENSLAND
This paper describes the rationale, features and findings associated with the development and implementation of Queensland Main Roads Rural Road Flood Warning system. This "proof of concept" system was selected as a national ITS demonstration project funded under the auspices of Australia's National ITS Strategy, "e-transport", which was developed for and managed by ITS Australia for the association of Australian and New Zealand road and transport and traffic authorities (Austroads). The system provides near real-time and predictive road flooding information on Queensland river crossings. The system obtains river height forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology and generates predictive information on road closures due to flooding based on a set of predetermined river height criteria for specific roads.
