PARKING BEHAVIOUR AND SEARCH TRAFFIC: A PILOT STUDY

PARKERINGSBETEENDEN OCH SOEKTRAFIK: EN PILOTSTUDIE

The traffic generated when motorists are searching for parking spaces can account for a large proportion of the traffic in city centres. The aim of this study was to find a method for estimating the volume of search traffic and to investigate motorists search strategies, desires concerning parking facilities, etc. During a number of days in September 1998, about 200 interviews were conducted in the centre of Gothenburg with motorists parking in multi-storey car parks, parking lots and kerbside parking. The questionnaire included a map for marking the route used within a delimited geographic area. Search traffic is defined here as the traffic mileage that occurs when a motorist drives from a full parking facility (or a facility where he or she has chosen not to park for some reason) to the facility finally chosen for parking. The method of describing search traffic and other parking aspects proved to operate well. Only 3 per cent of the motorists interviewed in Gothenburg had found it necessary to visit more than one parking facility in order to find a vacant space, thereby generating search traffic. (A)
