VDOT'S RESIDENTIAL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) maintains over 47,000 miles on its secondary road system, many of which are local, neighborhood, and subdivision streets located in the state's counties. VDOT is one of only a few state DOTs that maintain local roads and, accordingly, residential traffic management is an issues of concern not only to local jurisdictions but also to the Virginia DOT. Currently, VDOT offers three statewide programs under the umbrella of a Residential traffic management Program. Two are policies-one addressing the issue of through truck traffic problems and one addressing cut-through traffic. VDOT also has a Residential Traffic Calming Guide that provides neighborhoods with a third traffic management tool that deals specifically with speeding on neighborhood streets. The purpose of this paper is to provide details of this program.
