AT GRADE RAILROAD CROSSING SAFETY: 26 YEARS OF IMPROVEMENT IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA
The State of Georgia has approximately 11,333 (260,000 Nationwide) total railroad crossings. This total includes all public and private crossings, bridges, and pedestrian crossings. Georgia currently has 6962 "At-Grade" Public Railroad Crossings. Of these public crossings approximately 1,712 of them are equipped with train activated warning devices commonly referred to as "Bells, Lights, & Gates." The Georgia Department of Transportation developed a program to prioritize all public railroad crossings in the state in 1973. The department's program does not deal with private railroad crossings. However the Department does upgrade Highway-Rail Crossings that are not on the state Highway System. In the State of Georgia, and most other states, the standard Cross-Bucks and RR Crossing Pavement Markings are the only items required at each railroad crossing. The law further states that the train has the right of way and must be yielded by ALL vehicular traffic.
