EMISSIONS AND EFFECTS OF REGULATED AND UNREGULATED POLLUTANTS FROM ROAD TRAFFIC: A LITERATURE SURVEY
UTSLAEPP OCH EFFEKTER AV REGLERADE OCH OREGLERADE LUFTFOERORENINGAR FRAAN VAEGTRAFIK: LITTERATUROEVERSIKT
The beneficial effects of road traffic, such as accessibility, convenient transportation of goods and people, opportunities for recreation etc, should as a rule be weighted against the accompanying harmful or irritating consequences on humans and the environment. Among the deleterious effects of road traffic on the physical surroundings are pollutant emissions which influence the global climate and the chemical composition of the atmosphere, cause cancer and other illnesses in humans, and contribute to acidification, eutrophication, forest death, fragmentation and barrier effects. The literature study at hand aims briefly at describing emissions, and sources of emissions, of harmful substances from road traffic, the effects on plant life and human life resulting from these emissions, and includes a tentative quantification and evaluation of the effects with reference to the national environmental goals proclaimed by the Swedish Parliament. The account covers regulated pollutants, i.e. pollutants whose emissions are subject to legislative control, as well as other, unregulated emissions. (A)
