DIVERSITY AND CHANGE IN MOBILITY. PEOPLE'S DAILY TRAVEL IN SWEDEN 1978 AND 1996

ROERLIGHETENS MAANGFALD OCH FOERAENDRING. BEFOLKNINGENS DAGLIGA RESANDE I SVERIGE 1978 AND 1996

The main purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to contribute to an understanding of changes in daily mobility in Sweden between 1978 and 1996. Mobility is defined as revealed behaviour, e.g. actual travel done. Differences between segments of the population are seen as important for the understanding of mobility in general. The theoretical standpoint is that mobility plays an essential role in people's daily lives. However, most of the trips are not done for their own sake but as result of the need to perform an activity at a specific place. An activity-based approach to studying mobility has been the main inspiration for the analysis done in this study. In the theoretical approach the need to differentiate between different measures of of mobility is emphasised. The study is based on analyses of the Swedish National Travel Survey conducted in 1978 and 1994-96. In these surveys a relative large random sample of the population aged 15-84 years report their travel during one day. The results indicate that small changes in the average mobility for the whole population in Sweden has taken place. One important explanation is that the recession during the 1990's has affected daily mobility in several ways. Among different segments changes in mobility vary. Among young people mobility decrease while it increases among the elderly and women. Despite these changes there are still large differences between several of the studied segments of the population.
