EUROPEAN GROUND SNOW LOADS MAP: IRREGULAR AND EXCEPTIONAL SNOW FALLS

Infrequent, irregular, short duration snowfalls and single isolated very heavy snowfalls need to be taken into account when determining the characteristic values of ground snow loads for use in structural design. They require analysis techniques different from those for determining the characteristic values of frequent and long duration snow cover. This paper outlines work to determine loads corresponding to irregular and exceptional snow falls carried out as part of the European Snow Loads research project. It gives definitions for irregular and exceptional snow loads, develops criteria for identifying them, and outlines the statistical methods needed in their analysis. The methods are illustrated by examples taken from northern Germany. The locations of climatic stations within the 18 European Committee for Standardization countries with exceptional snow loads are identified on a map of Europe.
