AN XML/VML BASED SCHEMATIC MAP GENERATION SYSTEM FOR PEDESTRIAN NAVIGATION
The purpose of this paper is to present a novel schematic map generation system for pedestrian route guidance, in which the shortest route between two points is calculated and the route then converted into the Vector Markup Language (VML) format. The main advantage of VML maps is that the file size is small, which is a major requirement if the information is to be viewed on portable devices such as cellular phones. And another one is that the data can be viewed using standard browsers. The system was tested using data pertaining to the Tokyo Metropolitan area and the results show that the technique is able to generate a simple, vector image representing the optimal route between two points.
