DESIGNING FOR EASIER MAINTENANCE

As U.S. infrastructure has aged, maintenance has not kept pace with deterioration. According to the 2001 National Bridge Inventory, 28% of the nation's approximately 590,000 highway bridges are classified as either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. The challenge, especially in today's economic climate, is to make transportation system improvements and simultaneously maintain current inventory while keeping rehabilitation and maintenance costs down. This article discusses designing for easier, cost-saving maintenance for bridges.
