RAPID MICROWAVE AGING OF MODIFIED ASPHALTS
The paper introduces a rapid method to simulate both short term aging of modified binders by rolling thin film oven (RTFO) and long term aging by pressure aging vessels (PAV). The proposed method can be used for day-to-day quality assurance leaving RTFO and PAV for reference purposes. The method has been tested on 15 modified asphalt binders provided by the FHWA and five refineries. None of the 15 samples tested caused any experimental difficulties. Microwave aging proved to be free from problems for aging modified binders and offers a considerable savings of time and equipment.
