LANE RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY FOR DRIVER ASSISTANCE

Recently, many studies for a lane mark recognition system using a camera have been made. As a result of such studies, a lane deviation warning system and a steering assist driving support system have been commercialized. However, since such system requires ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and a forward monitoring camera exclusively used for the system, the cost of the entire system becomes high and that has been a barrier to the wide spread. At present, a parking assist system is becoming popular, which assists driver by showing an image taken by a rear-view camera when the driver of the vehicle parks his/her car at the rear-ward parking place. By using the rear-view camera used in this system and ECU in common, an inexpensive lane recognition system has been commercialized. This system promises to be used on the expressway where monotonous driving continues for noticing the driver with buzzer sound that the driver is approaching the border of the lane without intension. This paper will describe adaptation to various road circumstances and recognize lane marks while driving at night using the rear-view camera.
