ADVANCED FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS FOR CONGESTED URBAN AREAS
Although urban freight transportation is important, it does create disturbances that impact negatively on the quality of life in urban centers. This has led to increased efforts to measure and control freight movements within city centers. This paper introduces a potential organizational and technological framework for the integrated management of urban freight transportation. Important associated planning and operation issues and models are also identified. A formulation for one of these problems, the design of the proposed logistical structure, is described along with algorithmic and implementation issues. Proof-of-concept experiments based on data from the city of Rome indicate that the proposed system may indeed contribute toward creating a better city environment at a reasonable cost.
