VEHICLE COMPATIBILITY: ANALYSIS OF FATAL CRASHES

An important determinant of the absolute level of road trauma in the population is the variance in vehicle size within the vehicle fleet - that is, vehicle compatibility. This study provides estimates of relative injury risk by size of vehicle in fatal front and side impact crashes involving passenger vehicles in Australia. The results suggest that drivers and occupants in smaller vehicles are more likely to be killed in both frontal and side impact collisions with larger passenger vehicles. (a)
