DRILLED SHAFT UNDER TORSIONAL LOADING CONDITIONS
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) methods to analyze drilled shafts under torsional loading utilize the limit equilibrium approach for the soil surrounding the shaft. Additionally, these methods consider a simple torsional mode of loading only. The effect of the lateral loads on the torsional capacity is not included. In this study an attempt was made to include more than one mode of loading and to consider the method of construction in the analysis of the ultimate torsional capacity. Accordingly, the study was divided into three stages that included laboratory and field testing as well as finite element analysis. Based on the results of the study, a new procedure was developed to determine the torsional capacity of drilled shaft under torsional and lateral loading. This procedure is based on the p-y curve method and it was formulated using MathCAD platform. This platform was chosen to provide a compatibility with the FDOT method for designing mast arm structure. The new procedure for drilled shaft capacity was compared with the available FDOT methods. Although the existing methods do not consider the combined loading conditions, some similarities in the results may arise under certain loading magnitudes and soil conditions. Such similarities, however, do not exclude the fact that mast-arm drilled shafts are subjected to combined loading conditions with different magnitudes and directions depending on the configuration of the mast arm structures which are considered in the suggested method.
