SUPPLYING THE M1-A1 LINK

The M1-A1 link connects the end of the M1 motorway, near Leeds, England, with the A1 trunk road. Work on its construction scheme involved creating 30km of new motorway and a further 32km of local authority highways, associated with diversion routes and other amended layouts. It includes the construction of 45 bridges, 85 signal gantries, two tunnels, and the 250m long Aire Valley Viaduct. This paper describes the coated material contract for the scheme, which was the largest ever undertaken by Raisby Quarries, whose Cross Green coating plant was commissioned in February 1994. It includes a route map. The scheme required over 600,000t of coated material, and 200,000m3 of both base and pavement concrete; it involved 5Mm3 of earthworks. A consortium proposed a high-roadbase design, using 15pen bitumen and 68PSV, 14mm stone mastic asphalt (SMA). This design was used on the southern and northern sections to provide a fully flexible pavement. On the middle 15km section, a composite was used, where SMA was overlaid in continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) and the pavement was fully 'white' in certain areas. The paper discusses the raw materials used, the supply process, and the environmental benefits of the project.
