DESIGNING STREETS TO SUPPORT SMART GROWTH
This paper presents some of the concepts and considerations that will be included in a joint ITE/CNU effort to develop new design guidelines for urban major streets. These guidelines will merge context sensitive design with smart growth. The guidelines will be aimed at modernizing design policies, applications and the associated manuals and guides of standards-setting organizations and implementing agencies. The paper reviews some of the early considerations and objectives to be met by the designs in order to support and encourage vibrant, walkable communities that work transportation wise.
