ROAD PAVEMENT STRUCTURE DESIGN. DESCRIPTION OF TPPT-DESIGN SYSTEM

TIERAKENTEEN SUUNNITTELU JA MITOITUS. TPPT-SUUNNITTELU-JARJESTELMAN KUVAUS

The "Pavement Structures Research Programme" (TPPT) was part of the Finnish National Road Administration's (Finnra) strategic R&D-project "Road Structures Research Programme". The TPPT research programme was carried out in the years 1994-2001. The Pavement Structures Research Programme's general goal was to reduce the annual costs (life cycle costs; investment costs + maintenance costs) of new and reconstructed asphalt-surfaced roads. The goals set for the research programme will be achieved by using the road structure design system, which base on factors that describe road condition and evenness in the long run. The meaning of this report is to give an overall description of the functional pavement structure design system developed in the TPPT-program. In this report the content of the functional TPPT-pavement structure design system (TPPT-design system) is described. The TPPT-design system consists of the pavement design procedures for new construction and rehabilitation of roads. Road structures used in main roads will be dealt with. The TPPT-design system includes the TPPT-guidelines (field and laboratory investigation methods, road measurements, other design input-data, design procedures, etc.) which are necessary to accomplish the design work. The design system also includes a procedure for calculating the life cycle costs of alternative structural solutions that are applicable to the site in question. Economical comparisons based on the life cycle costs of the designed pavement structures support decision-making when selecting the structural solution for the site. Major part of the TPPT - guidelines have been tested in practice in connection with practical road construction and TPPT-test roads under actual traffic and climatic conditions. Developed planning and design methods and the applicability of pavement performance models are assessed on the basis of the results of long-term monitoring. The behaviour, distress and change of evenness of the test sites are clarified by long-term monitoring.
