This article gives an overview of the development of a prototype integrated Global Positioning System (GPS)-Loran system for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Loran evaluation program. Loran, a ground-based radionavigation system that can be used for determining position, velocity, and time in multiple applications, is being evaluated as part of the FAA's plans to transition to an area navigation (RNAV) system based on GPS. The article describes the processes involved in building the prototype, the integration of the Loran system with GPS, as well as a combined GPS-Loran antenna.
