TELEMATIC SYSTEMS: A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO ROAD SAFETY?

Ways in which telematic systems in freight vehicles can improve road safety are considered. On-board computers (OBCs) can combine mapping programmes with road information about speed limits and height restrictions. Advanced driver assistance systems can warn drivers if they get too close to the vehicle in front for prevailing weather conditions. Future systems will be able to apply the brakes if the driver does not slow down and also monitor vehicle maintenance status. New communication systems can reduce driver stress. Many OBC products give voice instructions to the driver so that he does not have to take his eyes off the road. Telematics can be used to advise customers when the lorry is a short distance away, allowing them to organise the unloading process in advance. Routing software and variable message signs can improve road safety. The Galileo European satellite system will increase capacity for electronic real-time positioning services and make the introduction of a Europe-wide road-user charging scheme for cars, buses and lorries a possibility.
