ANTHROPOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO CULTURE, AVIATION, AND FLIGHT SAFETY
This paper presents the case for a contribution from cultural anthropology to the challenges confronting aviation today. Observing worldwide growth of civil aviation, and the success of aviation in remaking world cultures, it describes some of the unanswered questions, unasked questions, and critical challenges facing aviation. Not the least of these is terrorism, an issue threatening to unmake everything aviation has accomplished. The toolkit of anthropology with which these issues might be tackled is described, and this work concludes with a table comparing current human factors approaches to anthropological approaches.
