FREEWAY SERVICE PATROL WARRANTS

Freeway service patrols are a countermeasure to freeway operations problems; their implementation can improve safety and mitigate congestion. For minor (non-injury) crashes, freeway service patrol personnel can inform drivers to clear their vehicles from travel lanes, or push disabled vehicles from the roadway. For more severe crashes, freeway service patrols can help emergency response agencies with traffic control. The data in this research paper underlie warrants for freeway service patrols. Generally, freeway service patrols should meet one or more of the warrants in this guidance. Where several warrants are met, it is almost certain that the freeway experiences acute operational deficiencies and freeway service patrols are recommended
