PARADIGM SHIFT IN MARINE TRANSPORTATION : RAMPING UP FOR ELECTRONIC CHARTS
This paper focuses on the Electronic Chart Display and Information System ( ECDIS) and the similarities and differences between ECDIS and Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS). An ECDIS is capable of when coupled to a positioning system such as DGPS, providing a tool that shows a ship's position and the surround hydrography. It can integrate a chart information package with other aids to navigation such as the ship's gyro compass, GPS and radar.
