THE EFFECT OF NEW TUNNELLING WORKS ON EXISTING UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES

This paper describes work investigating extensive monitoring data from two case studies in London which involved tunneling works being carried out close to existing underground structures. The first involved the construction of the Heathrow Express tunnels where they crossed beneath the London Underground Piccadilly Line and the second involved the enlargement of two London Underground Northern Line tunnels directly beneath and parallel to, twin main line rail tunnels near Old Street. Information is presented which adds to the current knowledge and understanding concerning the behavior of adjacent structures when new tunnels are constructed nearby, particularly with regard to settlements, rotation and distortion and the magnitudes of the induced movements.
