INTELLIGENT CAR-POOLING. A NEW TRAVEL DEMAND CONCEPT

In spite of the fact that Sweden is a sparsely-populated area, there is congestion in major cities during the rush hour. These problems cause delays, air pollution and accidents. The car occupancy is low especially during the morning rush hour, which means high fuel consumption per personkilometer. The possibilities of satisfying an increasing demand for new transport capacity by new roads and parking grounds are today limited, since there is lack of space and lack of money. Measures are therefore discussed in order to use the total transport system resources more "efficiently". The Swedish National Road Administration (SNRA) and the Local Road Authorities are now searching for new Travel Demand Management (TDM) Strategies to handle traffic problems. Therefore SNRA has commissioned the consulting firm Kjessler&Mannerstrale AB (KM) and the Ericsson Microwave Systems AB to work out a new transport concept, here named Intelligent Car-pooling, which could be attractive to travellers.
