THE APPLICATION OF MODIFIED ASPHALT MIXTURE IN EAST-RUNWAY OVERLAY CONSTRUCTION OF BEIJING CAPITAL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The east-runway of Capital International Airport of China has a length of 3800m and width of 60m. Constructed in 1954, it has many cracks and settlement. An overlay of modified asphalt concrete is used to cover all the old concrete pavement. Both the surface and intermediate course adopted modified asphalt with admixing PE (Polyethylene) and SBS to improve the property at very low temperature. The surface structure (6cm thick) adopted stone mastic asphalt mixture (SMA), and the intermediate course (7cm thick) and base course (3-8cm thick) adopted dense bituminous concrete. In this paper, the preparation of asphalt and construction process of the overlay are introduced in detail. The inspection results and problems observed are discussed.
