STUDY OF MODIFIED ASPHALT
Several modified asphalts are systematically studied in this paper by using GPC and DSC chemical means in order to explore the mechanism of asphalt modification. A concept of constituent state and molecular weight are proposed to explain the performance of asphalt and the mechanism of polymer modification of asphalt. It is concluded that: 1) the molecular weight and the constituent state are the two factors influencing performance of asphalt. High-quality asphalt is characterized by high molecular weight and the peculiarity of constituent transition which happens at low temperature scope; and 2) with the addition of macro-molecular polymer, the constituent formation is changed due to the swelling and absorption, which leads to the change of the constituent state transition characteristic, so the performance of asphalt is improved, especially the temperature stability and viscosity at high temperature.
