FIRST PHASE OF VEHICLE INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION SYSTEM (VICS) DEPLOYMENT
After long preparation, government agencies, academic organizations and private companies worked together to begin the operation of the Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS), on April 23. VICS supplies real time traffic information such as congestion, journey time, road restriction and parking conditions to an in-vehicle unit through 3 different transmission media, whereby drivers will know the best route to their destinations. VICS aims at smoother and safer driving. In this paper, the authors present the detailed situation present at the first phase of deployment, by introducing the system configuration and the type of commercialized vehicle units used. Past approaches, including the demonstration held at ITS Yokahama 95, and several different tests done prior to real operation, will be discussed.
