INTRODUCTION OF AVM SERVICES IN A PUBLIC TRANSPORT COMPANY: EVALUATION METHOD IN A REAL CASE STUDY

This paper describes the experience currently being done by the Public Transport company of the city of Florence, Italy, in planning and managing the introduction of a new AVM system in the transport network of the metropolitan area. Starting from an existing AVM installation, the paper presents the relevant aspects of the different phases (identification of needs, requirements specifications, tender definition, etc.) and the operational implications of the acquisition and installation in the transit company. An evaluation method for analyzing and selecting different system offers in a bid will be presented. This method is based on system breakdown into different components. For each technological component, the relevant features are identified and weighted with respect to the overall component. The experience described in the article is related to a technology promotion and development work partly carried out in the framework of the Italian National Research Programme on Transportation Systems (Progetto Finalizzato Trasporti 2, PFT2) and in the framework of JUPITER, a multi-national project carried out under the European THERMIE programme.
