HISTORIC HIGHWAY BRIDGES IN WISCONSIN. VOLUME 3, PART 1: HISTORICAL SURVEY OF WISCONSIN MOVABLE BRIDGES

This report presents the results of a survey of movable highway bridges located on public thoroughfares in the State of Wisconsin. Prepared for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), the study is intended to assist the agency in fulling its historic preservation responsibilities as mandated by the National Historic Preservation Act the Department of Transportation Act, and related amendments, laws, and regulations. To this end, the report focuses on the identification, documentation, and evaluation of significant movable highway bridges within the boundaries of the state. Chapter 1 outlines the project's background, objectives, and methodology. Chapter 2 provides an historical overview of Wisconsin movable bridges, while Chapter 3 discusses those bridges recommended for National Register designation as part of the present project. Illustrations, endnotes, and a bibliography supplement the text. An appendix containing field-survey forms for all bridges included in the study is published separately (Volume 3, Part 2).
