ARCTIC SUBMARINE TANKER SYSTEM

Conceptual design of nuclear submarine tanker systems for transporting oil from the Arctic north slope of the U.S. east coast are developed and analyzed. A direct, all-submarine system using the north polar route is compared with a submarine-to-ULCC transshipment system and with ice-breaking tanker and pipeline systems. Results show that submarine tanker systems are technically feasible, offer an attractive rate of return and compare favorably with other delivery systems in terms of transportation costs.
