MOBILITY SURVEYS IN LISBON AND PORTO: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF RESULTS (CHAPTER 16 OF TRAVEL BEHAVIOUR RESEARCH: UPDATING THE STATE OF PLAY)

Large-scale mobility surveys in Portugal were conducted for the first time in Porto in 1992 and in Lisbon in 1993. In both cases, it was felt that the information thus collected was indispensable to support decision processes about transport networks and policies. Since the two studies have been made using essentially the same methodology, results are easily comparable and provide a deeper understanding of the reasons behind the statistics in each case. This chapter reviews some of the main indicators, presented in parallel for the central city and the suburban municipalities of both areas, and develops some comments about the possible explanations for the differences.
