A REAL-TIME STRATEGY SELECTION SYSTEM

Since 1994, the Traffic Director for London has funded a series of innovative projects to investigate the use of existing traffic control "strategies" in situations that they were not originally designed to address. The projects have been carried out on a 6 km section of the A12 in the eastern suburbs of London containing six traffic signal junctions. As part of this series of projects, the Traffic Director for London now intends to implement a real-time strategy selection system. This system will provide the network manager with real-time information on the effect on traffic of the current and alternative signal control "strategies". This information will include recommendations for switching strategy as traffic conditions change. These recommendations will be based on "rules" developed from observations as part of the research. This paper outlines the results of the previous projects, and describes the strategy selection system. For the covering abstract, see IRRD 490001.
