ACCESS TO TRANSPORT SYSTEMS AND SERVICES : AN INTERNATIONAL REVIEW
This report summarizes the result of a literature review on the accessibility problems of elderly and disabled people. It forms the first part of a study of the scope for improving accessibility of transport through the application of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and other advanced technologies. It considers the size of the disabled population, the capabilities of individuals and the access problems experienced by pedestrians, bus passengers, train passengers and car drivers. There are many well-known design and operational improvements that could be applied to increase accessibility without involving advanced technology. However, even after physical accessibility has been improved there will remain barriers that could be overcome by better information and the application of intelligent transportation systems and other advanced technology.
