HIGHWAY 407 ETR - EXPRESS TOLL ROUTE - DEVELOPMENT OF PRECAST CONCRETE GIRDER BRIDGE DESIGNS

Highway 407 is a new 69 km (43 mi) long multi lane urban all electronic toll highway being constructed north of Metropolitan Toronto. Several innovative design features were developed and incorporated into the bridge designs for the highway. This paper summarizes the value engineering process resulting in the standardization of the precast concrete girder bridge design and details, and the development of the integral abutment bridge designs. The development of the precast concrete girder shapes, sizes and spacing resulting in reduced girder fabrication and erection time and construction savings is also discussed and the value of mechanically stabilized earth retaining structures for future abutments and long wingwalls and high retaining walls is reviewed.
