USING SOCIOECONOMIC INFORMATION TO ASSESS THE IMPACTS OF SURFACE TRANSPORTATION IN NORTH CAROLINA COASTAL COMMUNITIES. VOLUME 3: SURVEY RESULTS

This project addressed the examination of historical interplay between surface transportation infrastructure and community/regional development in Dare and Hyde Counties, NC; examination of historic role of marine resource dependency; identification of communication networks in terms of structure and function; assessment of perceived surface transportation needs; identification of highway, bridge, and ferry use patterns of residents in 41 eastern NC counties, as that use pertains to coastal travel; incorporation of findings into a geographic information systems (GIS) file; development of a socioeconomic monitoring plan. Methods included historical records analysis, key informant interviewing, surveys and standard GIS protocols. This report, Volume 3, completes work related to the second first-year study objective: examination of linkages between the human and natural environments using structured and unstructured interviews. This document has three distinct, but interrelated parts. The first part presents data from a random survey of 1,015 households in 41 counties in eastern North Carolina. The objective was to establish use of NC's coastal beach areas in terms of style and frequency. Along with this, the purpose was to establish uses of surface transportation infrastructure to access beach areas. The second part presents data to establish communication networks within the coastal communities that represent the study area. Important communication linkages were discovered between Wanchese and Manteo, and the area covering Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, and Duck. As a result, interviewing occurred in those three communities as well. The third part involved interviewing respondents in the communication networks in regard to perceptions of valued community/environmental attributes, and the field of risks or opportunities that might affect the community's future.
